Natural fibers: Silk
The silk :
Silk most often comes from the bombyx mori (silkworm). The latter wraps itself in a cocoon made of a continuous thread (the only natural continuous thread) which measures 700 to 1200 meters long. The thread is made up of two very fine filaments of a protein substance called fibroin. These two strands are held together by sericin, a kind of sandstone which retains the silk filaments and which is eliminated during digging. Unscrubbed silk is called raw silk.
The advantages of silk:
Due to its natural elasticity (around 15%), silk is very wrinkle-free. Although its fiber is the finest of natural fibers, it is as strong as steel (at equal fineness). Among its advantages, we can also cite a very high affinity for dyes thanks to its absorbent properties.
The disadvantages of silk:
Silk is particularly sensitive to chemical attack. Perspiration, deodorants and perfumes as well as unsuitable detergents can damage it.
